On one of those visits I was wearing a flared skirt. Being a little bit bored, I was twirling around on her dining room floor, when Aunt Nellie told me I had to stop because I was wearing out the linoleum!! I was so crushed and didn't know what to do. I found "The Dog" sitting on the floor by her desk. Holding back the tears I sat myself down right next to "The Dog" and proceeded to unload my woes to "The Dog." Years went by and I never forgot that incident. Perhaps, because my mother kept fueling the issue, by saying over and over "how could a little girl, wear out the linoleum by twirling?"
Time went on, Aunt Nellie passed away, leaving my cousin and myself to take care of things. We had to disburse the household, giving each cousin dibs on what they wanted. We are a close group, and they all agreed I should get 'The Dog'. And for good reason, they all had heard the story!!
"The Dog" was not the most valuable item in the house, but it was important to me.
My Aunt Minnie made this dog for Aunt Nellie. It is made out of a brick for the body, I don't know what the head is made of and all covered with (I'm guessing cow hair) !! She even gave "The Dog" a cute little collar!
"The Dog" doesn't have a name, but he's on my living room floor; reminding me, that anything is replaceable, and sharp words can never be taken back.

a big 'awwww'! :)
ReplyDeleteIt's nice to have a dog to tell your troubles to. Good story. :)
ReplyDeleteI hope that you have not had to run to confide too many hurts to the dog over the years.
ReplyDeleteDogs are good listeners and always make me feel better when troubled ! Lovely post . Glad this pup makes you happy whether its the real thing or not ! I think it is cute and looks well made ! Have a good day , oh and hug your dog it does the body and mind good !
ReplyDeleteI would like to have a bunch of them to give some people (including myself) that sharp, hurtful words cannot be taken back! :)
ReplyDeleteI have a friend who is writing about her stuff. It's good to get the stories behind those random items we have in our houses down on paper. Those who are left when we are gone might not know the history behind some of those treasurd items. After my mom died I got several items that are very meaningful to me, but I also got a lot of other stuff that I have no idea of the history and now there is no one to ask.
ReplyDeleteIsn't it funny the things we remember from our childhood -- good and bad? That 'dog' served a meaningful purpose and by rights, he should be yours!
ReplyDeletePeace,
Muff
awwwwww, so cute!! we all need someone to tell our troubles to!!
ReplyDeleteI bet the dog has had a lot of hugs over the years. And if my linoleum was ever going to wear out...I would want it to be from a little girl sweetly twirling on it. :)
ReplyDeleteIsn't it odd how some "hurts" from the past stay with us so sharply? I was very bashful and that would have hurt my feelings, too. I think you should call the dog, "Linny" for linoleum!!!!!
ReplyDeleteThis was a touching story. I thought about something similar that happened to me when I was a young girl. Hurtful words can never be taken back! The little doggie was there for you then, and here for you now. I wish I was there to give you a big hug, so please accept this one from us...{{{{{{HUG}}}}}}!
ReplyDeleteNice story, he looks like a good friend to have....
ReplyDeleteAmazing how sharp words said to a child can be remembered for so long. I bet we have all said things we don't remember but the person we said them to sure does! ;)
ReplyDeleteVery touching story. The Dog looks like a good friend to have.
ReplyDeleteThe Bible says the tongue is so dangerous and boy is that the truth. I believe
ReplyDeletethe saying goes, if you don't have anything good to say then don't say anything at all.
Hard to live by so true. Thanks for sharing your story. I'm sure it still hurts to remember.
HI Muffy ...my goodness when I first saw the dog I thought it was real ,except the nose was a dead give away lol!!
ReplyDeleteI am glad for you to have the Doggie...your silent consoler! I do remember similar situation growing up, and they do stay with you !! I had an aunt with no children!!
Grace
hi Muffy, that's an absolutely adorable dog...and an absolutely adorable story...well I'm sure at the time it happened it wasn't adorable...but time has given it a wonderful patina and you the most beautiful hand sewn dog I've ever seen. sometimes adults forget how their words will stick with a child...sometimes I hear my mother's words coming right out of my mouth...scary
ReplyDeleteWell thank goodness for the dog that made you feel better! At least you were allowed to touch him! I wonder if your Aunt felt bad? Not having children probably not:(
ReplyDeleteAll those years, and that sharp nasty comment still hurts you...I am so sorry.
ReplyDeleteMakes us realize how little it takes to make someone hurt....but at least the dog understands.
She most likely could have used a bit of honey on her words.

Awww, Muffy, I can just see a sad little girl pouring her heart out to the Dog. And I agree, how can a little twirling girl wear out the linoleum? Heartwarming, bittersweet 'tale.' I'll bet you love The Dog as much today.
ReplyDeleteHugs from me to you.
BlessYa
Love this story so true sharp words hurt more than one knows...... Glad you have the Dog.....
ReplyDeleteSo sad that your Auntie was so worried about her floor! One wonders what made her that way. Interesting that you ended up with "Dog".
