Today we took a short trip to Bullhead City for a little retail therapy.
On the way we encountered modern day shepherds.
We were driving along when a couple of guys holding red flags signaled us to stop.
With the help of their dogs, they were crossing the sheep and lambs to the other side of the road.
The haze you see is dust stirred up by the animals.
I was surprised to see a Great Pyrenees as a herder.
Although,I know they are good sheep dogs, I assumed this climate would be way too hot for them.
After a few minutes the flock was on the other side of the road, and we were on our way!!!
And that's the way it is........................
how awesome. some old-fashioned ways but still work. :)
ReplyDeleteThis is quite the sight. Not the usual traffic on the roads, but more interesting than motorized vehicles.
ReplyDeleteEvery day is a new adventure. I love those working dogs!
ReplyDeleteLoved seeing the dogs work the sheep. We had a Australian shepard who could move our cows into the barn and all we had to was stand and watch!
ReplyDeleteCool--seems kind of strange to even have sheep in such a warm climate???
ReplyDeleteWhen we were in Ireland these sheep crossings were a regular occurrence. Love the photos!
ReplyDeleteWhat a thrill to see, watch, and hear in person! Such pretty animals.

WOW! What a great thing to experience, and how great that you caught photos!! Thanks for sharing with us!!
ReplyDeleteHow great to be there at that moment! The Great Pyrenees are guardian dogs, so he was just moving across the road with his flock. My son was in New Zealand and he told me a great story. He was following behind a shepherd on a quad, who was following his flock of sheep down the road. There were fences down the sides of the road. At one point one of the dogs got off the back of the quad, headed under the fence and through the trees, and as the flock moved further along and came to an intersection, there was that dog making sure the sheep didn't turn down the wrong road.
ReplyDeleteFun to watch! A Great Pyrenees is about the best flock protector you can get, they stay awake all night long tending the sheep from predators and then sleep in the morning..wonderful dogs:)
ReplyDeleteVery interesting. Recently we observed this breed of dog in the pens with goats near our home. Did not know the name til now! THX
ReplyDeleteIt's been many years since I've encountered a herd of sheep. Thank you for sharing this.
