Hand - Foot Coordination

To get around the house, I use my walker for stability.  Since our weather has been so fantastic lately, I do want to get outside and walk a little.  The Physical Therapist is teaching me how to re learn to walk.  I let my knee go for so long, that I threw my walking pattern off.

So here's the tricky part, (at least for this uncoordinated lady)  Right foot- step with heal and let foot roll to toe,  then left step forward.  OK I am working on that, plus trying to keep my foot straight with each step; as I tend to swing my leg out.

The next challenge-- when the right foot moves forward, the cane in my left hand should go with the foot.   Sounds simple, doesn't it?

Its a good thing we have few neighbors, because I must be a sight to chuckle at, as I try to put this all together.
Left, right, heel, toe, straight foot, cane..... oh my.
Who knew walking took so much concentration.

And that's the way it is.............

  6. When I was learning to use a cane, I got the same instruction. Logically, it makes sense, but I was more comfortable using it the opposite way -- rebel that I am! Sounds as if you're making progress! Way to go!

  10. And when you master all that, you will have to start on learning to chew gum at the same time.
Glad you are up and walking!

  12. Dang! I've trying to get myself caught up on reading after these long weeks that I was just too busy, and I certainly missed out on your news! That having been said, it sounds as if you're getting the hang of strutting a new strut! Keep working on it, and I'll bet you'll be back to dancing soon.

  14. . I have bad sciatic in hip so at times I have to use the cane. Oh your right.

It is hard to get out of old habits to learn the proper way of getting back to balance us out. To even handle the cane and the stepping you say. Foot and the cane. Oh boy.

I am also doing the exercise. Lay on the bed and now lift two feet off the bed mattress. Oh my. That is not fun need the strength. Yup, yup. Whew ..

So glad your getting about. Brave gal you are. Pictures are a delight! I admire the fall. Our Fall was early but I live in the part of Algonquin. Comes first the reds then others.

    Have a nice weekend.

  15. Actually, that way of walking is how we should all be doing it. It puts less strain on our other body parts. Pretty soon it will be natural. Hang in there and keep taking cool pictures.

  17. We sure take those things for granted when we're younger, don't we. Having to concentrate on walking is a real pain. And so understandable that your gait was thrown off. I'm concerned about the same thing with a possible hip replacement. Hope your day goes well. Hang in there. You'll get it nailed down yet. Beautiful leaf photos!!

  18. Hi Muffy, it is always difficult to re-learn anything as we get older. Hoping that things are going better for you as each day passes. Your photos are beautiful!

  19. Hi Muffy! We have a few blogging friends in common, and one of them gave me the link to your page. I am facing knee replacement surgery, and was asking for information about any experiences they have had, themselves or friends/loved ones. I will have to go back into your archives and come forward, but wanted you to know who I am and why I am peeking at your pages!! Thanks! Terri D.

    1. Thanks for visiting my blog "Muffy's Marks" Good luck with your knee surgery. My advice to you is to stick with the therapy and take pain meds. My surgery was 3 1/2 weeks ago. I was in the hospital for 3 days then moved to a rehab center for an additional week. I was in rehab longer than usual, because I had a 2 and half hour drive to get home. In this time, I am gradually getting more strength in my knee/leg, The knee itself doesn't hurt, its all the muscles and tendons around the knee that need to be stretched and made to work again. I am finding that when I'm moving around the house I tend to forget my walker and am walking around it. For me the worst is getting comfortable in bed. Lots of tossing and turning to get comfy. For the first two weeks I really spent my nights in the recliner. For the last two nights I have only woken up twice in the middle of the night. Took another pain pill and off to sleep again. Again the best of luck with your surgery. We'll have to compare notes a few weeks down the road.
Prayers for a successful surgery. Muffy

  20. Thanks for the information! I am getting a second opinion on November 4th. My current ortho doc says I am too young for the surgery. I'm 61 (almost 62) and am not sure why that makes me too young. The new doc was a referral from a friend who just had knee replacement. She says he is great. So, nothing scheduled yet. Time will tell. Thanks again for the info. I am excited to start following your blog!!
