Cabbage Run

Our daughter-in-law's aunt, who lives in northern Minnesota, makes sauerkraut.  For the last few years, we have been picking up cabbages for them for $1.00 a head.  When my son lived up there, it was easy-peasy to get the cabbages to her.  Now that sonny boy lives in the cities, it has become a little more difficult to connect.  With the gas prices nearing $4.00 a gallon, the dollar a head is not a deal, when you're talking 1000 miles round trip.
Luckily, we have a neighbor who works in Virginia, MN, which is about 100 miles from her aunt.  Bless his heart, he is willing to take the cabbages (all 20 of them) to Minnesota.  Hurray, the connections are made!

Yesterday, was a beautiful day for a ride to the produce stand.
We did stop at another produce stand that we have never dealt with before.  Their cabbages were small and had worm holes in them and they wanted $.30 a pound.  That was very pricy compared to what we could get them for farther south.

It was such pretty ride, as the leaves are starting to peak.  When we arrived at the market, there was so much to look at.
Pumpkins all lined up - sorted according to size

Rows and rows of hearty mums

Gourds in many shapes and sizes

Hubby's favorite, Hybrid  kolarabi

Huge jumbo squash

Other than the produce that is sold by the pound, its all on the 'honor system'.  We loaded the truck with the cabbages, and bags of onions before we went into the small store to weigh up the produce sold by the pound, and pay for it all.

Inside the store is delightful, the shelves were stocked with canned fruits and vegetables.

With the truck loaded, we headed back home.  Along the way we stopped at a wayside along the Wolf River.  It is such a pretty place... see for yourself:

And that's the way it is...........................

  13. So much color, and texture where you live..it's beautiful. There is a real lack of deciduous trees here, and so less color.

I love the idea of saurkraut, how much do your friends make? They must eat a lot of it.

  19. Don't you just love this time of year! Gorgeous photos. Here in NW Wisconsin I think we are at peak color right now. Every road we drive down evokes a 'Look at THAT!' It's just beautiful, and will stay that way for a few more days unless we get rain.

Glad to have found your blog. I'm your newest follower. :-)
